About Whim Ales

A Brief Look At The History Of Whim Ales

We are a ten barrel micro brewery specialising in producing top of the range cask ale using the finest Maris Otter malt, whole cone hops, Derbyshire hill water and our own freshly cropped yeast.

Whim Ales started in 1993 in an outstanding location at The Whim Farm near Hartington in The Derbyshire Dales, Peak District; the brainchild of owner Giles Litchfield who wanted to make use of redundant farm buildings and have more beer than even he could drink. To design the brewery and commission the plant, highly experienced brewing consultant David Smith was enlisted followed by soon to be Head Brewer Joe Allsop and tasked with the following remit which still stands true today:

  • To consistently make fantastic beer
  • To consistently make fantastic beer that is not bland or tasteless

This seems to have done the trick. 27 years on and we still have the same setup with the same head brewer and a creative dedicated long serving team.  Hard work, consistently producing exceptional beer

With no compromise or short cuts on quality and full commitment to dealing directly with our customers has earned our reputation in the business rather than clever marketing or cheap ale.

Thank you to all that have supported us over the years and to all of you who will continue to sell and drink our ales which we are very proud of.
